Vanemuine has the right to stage a new production of “The Phantom of the Opera”. Vanemuine was the third theatre in the world that had been granted the right to produce a new production. This is by far the most valuable licence Vanemuine has ever been granted – the production that has gained over 130 million visits is known to be the most strictly protected play. Gaining the licence is a huge recognition to everyone at Vanemuine. In the production we will see only the best Estonian singers and actors. In the role of The Phantom of the Opera we can see Stephen Hansen for whom it will be the first role to sing in Estonian.
Read moreThe first time the Estonian public saw Stephen Hansen in Vanemuine theatre, dates back to 2004, when he performed in musical Jesus Christ Superstar as Jesus. The troupe of The Phantom of the Opera is enormous as suitable for the king of musicals. There will be more than 100 actors, singers, dancers and musicians on the stage every night: professional choir of 32 members, ballet troupe of 16 members and symphony orchestra of 64 members conducted by Martin Sildos – all in addition to soloists.
The collaboration with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s company started in 2002 with the production “Evita” staged at Tartu Town Hall Square (dir Tiit Ojasoo and Ene-Liis Semper). Georg Malvius also staged Evita in 2009 and 2014. There were also Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Cats” and many more well known musicals from other authors such as Disney’s / Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins”, R. Rodgers’s / O. Hammerstein’s “The Sound of the Music” and many others. Since then, altogether 13 years, the theatre has been working towards gaining the licence of “The Phantom of the Opera”.
The production has been prepared more than a year. The intense rehearsal period will be over after less than 2 weeks. You are most welcome to see Vanemuine’s The Phantom of the Opera – so far the biggest musical production in Estonia – on 4th of October 2014! The number of performances and tickets is limited – Vanemuine has the right to give only 40 performances. All in all, 24 performances are held in the next season, eight of them in Tallinn in the Nordea Concert Hall.
